What Causes Dry Skin
Dry skin can be caused by many things such as your environment, diet and health as well as the use of harsh drying soaps. But no matter the cause most people will agree that dry skin, especially dry itchy skin can be maddening.
During the winter dry skin is usually caused by a combination of dehydration, people typically tend to drink less water in the winter. And your environment, which in the winter usually consists of harsh cold weather and dry indoor air, all of which can take its toll on your skin.
When left untreated dry skin can sometimes turn into dermatitis, which is an inflammation of the skin causing swelling and infection. But luckily dry skin is usually quite treatable using proper skin care.

Use A Humidifier
One of the most important things that you can do to help get rid of dry itchy skin is to use a humidifier to add more moisture to your indoor air.
Humidifier's really aren't all that expensive and when it comes to getting rid of the dry itchy skin they are well worth the price.
When choosing a humidifier it is important that you pick one that will be large enough for the area that plan on using it. The smaller ones work well for a bedroom or small office but they won't do a good job for a larger area such as a living room.

Use Lotion
During winter months its always a good idea to use plenty of a good quality lotion. I like to use lotion morning and night and as after showers or baths.
When applying after a shower or bath be sure to apply your lotion while your skin is still damp. This helps to seal in moisture and keep your skin hydrated.
You will find a lot of different lotions available on the market but for extra dry skin nothing works like Neutrogena Norwegian Therapy, it works great for dry cracked hands and feet. It's also very concentrated so a little goes a long way
You may also find it helpful to use a lotion applicator to reach those hard to reach spots like the middle of your back. I picked up one last winter and have found it to be invaluable.

Use Bath Bombs
Try pampering your skin with a moisturizing bath bomb. Bath bombs work great for after sun skin care or to sooth dry itchy winter skin.
Hot baths although they feel really good in cold weather server only to further dry out your skin. It's better for your skin to take a warm bath but using a moisturizing bath bomb in the bath can make a huge difference in your skin.
A good moisturizing bath bomb should always contain shea butter. Other things to look for in a good bath bomb are cocoa butter, olive oil, jojoba oil and grape seed oil.

Be Gentle With Your Skin
Be gentle with your skin and avoid harsh deodorant soaps and chemicals.
Instead try a beauty bar or unfragranced soap that has been formulated for sensitive skin.
When washing it's usually not necessary to apply a lot of soap, most of the time a small amount will do. And make sure to not scub your skin, this will only result in further breakdown of your skin.
After bathing gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel before applying your lotion.
